Studying in the lecture phase

At the end of this chapter, I would like to talk about studying in the lecture phase. As described, it is helpful to divide the semester into the lecture and exam phases and to study in a different way in the different phases. In the lecture phase, it is not about becoming an expert in every subject and being able to solve tasks for every topic already at exam level without any problems. It is about understanding the basic concepts, being able to solve standard tasks, gaining a good overview and preparing for the exam phase. At the beginning of my studies, I was worried and stressed out too much in retrospect because I couldn't work through topics during the semester quickly enough to be able to solve exam level tasks.

Don't make the same mistake. In the lecture phase, you should lay the foundation, which is then taken up and completed in the exam phase. How well you must prepare yourself in the lecture phase naturally depends on your university and its system. The less time you have after the lecture phase to study for the exams, the better you must prepare yourself during the lecture phase.

In the lecture phase, you must actively plan your studying time. Studying whenever you have time does not work. You need a concrete plan and fixed times, otherwise something is always more important than focused studying. You will get the reward for this in the exam. We have discussed two possibilities of how to actively plan your studying. The first possibility is to include study time in your semester plan. Here you can set weekly times for your study, tailored to your university timetable. The other possibility is to include study time in your weekly schedule, which is created every week. If you notice when planning the week that on some days you still have time to study in addition to the already scheduled study times from the semester plan, you can also actively schedule study time here. If you have a study group, you should agree on fixed appointments and follow a regular rhythm. In this way, studying becomes a fixed part of every week. You will learn systematically and continuously what is necessary to achieve good grades in mechanical engineering in the long-term so that you can really complete your studies successfully.

Towards the end of the lecture phase, you should look ahead and prepare for the exam phase, not only from a technical but also from an organizational point of view. There is nothing more annoying during the exam phase than appointments that you could have managed earlier. Clear your calendar before the exams so that you can fully concentrate on studying and relaxing. Yes relax, because that is also important every day and especially after an exam, but more about that later. Check your calendar to see if you already have appointments that you can reschedule and think about which appointments might be coming up soon that you can get done now.
